"The wise person is guided by what he feels and not by what he sees.
He lets go of that over there and chooses this right here."
Directing your attention inward will connect you with a world of knowledge, memories, feelings, and intuitions that have been accumulating your whole life. Moreover, these things are more personally meaningful than anything you observe from a distance. Consequently, looking within will not only provide you with information with which to make decisions, it will provide you with a compass to guide you toward choices that are actually meaningful to you.
The farther outside yourself that you look, the less accurate your perceptions get, and the less those images have to do with your life. We see all kinds of images around us in the world and on TV, yet few of these things will have any bearing on our lives. Sitting in a room, watching the news for example, getting upset and making judgments about distant events, is only going to waste time. Conversely, paying attention to the events unfolding right here in front of us, and paying attention to how they make us feel and what they mean to us, is going to equip us to move in a direction that will take us where we ultimately want to be.
